Larimer Ledger Tax & Accounting for Small Business in Fort Collins, CO

Tax & Accounting for Small Business  ·  Fort Collins, CO

The books, the return, and what the numbers actually say.

Tax and bookkeeping for S-corps, partnerships and sole proprietors along the Front Range. Returns, quarterly estimates and payroll filings, priced flat and agreed before the work starts.

Set out on this page: s-corp and partnership returns, individual returns, quarterly estimates, bookkeeping and cleanup, payroll filings, entity setup and irs notices.

What happens

In the order it happens, so there are no surprises in the middle of it.

  1. Read the last two returns

Before we quote. Prior-year depreciation, basis and carryforwards tell us what the job really is, and occasionally they turn up an amendment worth filing.

  2. Engagement letter

Scope and a flat fee in writing. Bookkeeping is priced separately by the month so a messy year does not arrive as a surprise line on a tax invoice.

  3. Organizer and portal

A short list of what we need, and a portal for the documents. Nothing with a Social Security number on it comes to us by email.

  4. Draft review

A call to walk the return — where the number came from, what changed from last year, and what the K-1 does to your 1040.

  5. File and plan the next year

E-filed with the acknowledgement sent to you, then estimates and withholding set for the year ahead while the numbers are still in front of us.

Questions

Answered in full here, rather than hidden behind a click or left for the phone call.

Should I elect S-corp status?

Only above a profit level where the payroll tax saved clears the cost of running payroll and a second return. We will do that arithmetic with your numbers before you elect.

What counts as reasonable compensation?

What someone would be paid to do your job for someone else. We document how we arrived at it, because a distribution-heavy split with a token salary is the first thing examined.

Can you take me on mid-year, or on extension?

Yes. Extension work and cleanups are a normal part of the year. Bring the prior returns and whatever the books currently look like.

Do we have to meet in person?

No. Most clients use the portal and one review call. The office is here if you would rather sit down with the return printed out.

What do you need from me in January?

Bank and card statements through December, payroll reports, 1099s received, any closing statements, and mileage. The organizer lists the rest.

What we do

6 lines of work, each described in full rather than summarised.

This is scope, not a price list — what each piece of work covers. No fee is printed on this page.

S-corp and partnership returns

1120-S and 1065 prepared with K-1s out before the 15 March deadline, basis tracked year to year, and reasonable compensation reviewed rather than copied forward.

Includes 1120-s, 1065, k-1s.

Individual returns

1040 with Schedule C, E or F, the Colorado DR 0104, and multi-state returns where the work crossed a line. Rental depreciation schedules checked against the closing statement.

Includes schedule c, schedule e, multi-state.

Quarterly estimates

1040-ES worked from the year in front of you, not last year’s number. We aim at the safe harbor when the income is lumpy and say plainly when you should overpay Q4 instead.

Includes 1040-es, safe harbor, withholding.

Bookkeeping and cleanup

Monthly reconciliation in QuickBooks Online, owner draws kept out of the expense accounts, and a cleanup of whatever the last eighteen months did before we file on top of it.

Includes reconciliation, cleanup, chart of accounts.

Payroll filings

941s and the 940, W-2s and 1099-NECs by 31 January, Colorado wage withholding and unemployment filed on the same schedule so nothing falls between them.

Includes 941, w-2, 1099-nec.

Entity setup and IRS notices

Form 2553 and a straight answer on whether an S-election saves anything at your profit level, plus CP2000 responses and penalty abatement requests when a letter turns up.

Includes form 2553, cp2000, abatement.

About the practice

Who you would actually be dealing with, in the practice’s own words.

Larimer Ledger is a two-room office on Mountain Avenue. We work with owner-operated businesses — trades, restaurants, design and consulting firms — and we do the bookkeeping for most of the returns we file, which is why the returns are quicker.

We do not sell investments or insurance, so nothing we recommend earns us anything on the other side. If the answer is that your current arrangement is already right, that is the answer you will get.
