Patios, Walls & Stonework Doylestown, PA
Patios, walls and walkways in stonein Doylestown, PA
Paver patios, segmental walls and Pennsylvania bluestone work in Bucks County. Everything we build sits on a compacted 2A modified base cut below frost depth, because that is what decides whether it is still flat in five winters.

Works
What this firm takes on
-
01
Paver patios & walkways
Excavated to subgrade, geotextile over the soil, 2A modified compacted in lifts, bedding sand screeded, then edge restraint and polymeric sand.
-
02
Retaining walls
Segmental block with geogrid where the height calls for it, clean stone backfill and a drain tile daylighted so water is not loading the wall.
-
03
Bluestone patios & steps
Full-range or select Pennsylvania bluestone, wet-laid on a concrete base or dry-laid on stone dust, with risers kept even across the flight.
-
04
Fire pits, seat walls & pillars
Built off their own footing, with veneer or full-thickness stone and a cap set on a full mortar bed rather than dabs.
-
05
Drainage & grading
Surface grading, French drains and downspout extensions run out to daylight, usually the real fix behind a wet basement or a heaving walk.
-
06
Repairs & relays
Lifting settled pavers, rebuilding the base where it washed out, re-setting loose bluestone treads and repointing joints.

Order of work
How a job runs
-
Phase 01
Site visit and layout
We walk the grades, mark where water goes now, and lay the shape out with paint so you can stand on it before anything is dug.
-
Phase 02
Written proposal
Material named by manufacturer and colour, base depth stated in inches, square footage measured rather than estimated.
-
Phase 03
Excavation and base
Utilities marked through PA One Call, soil hauled off, geotextile down, then base placed and plate-compacted in lifts of a few inches.
-
Phase 04
Setting and finishing
Pavers or stone set to the layout, cuts made on a wet saw, edge restraint spiked, joints swept, compacted and locked.
-
Phase 05
Clean-up and walk-through
Beds restored, site swept, and a walk with you covering settling, efflorescence and when to seal if you want to.
Notes
Asked before the first visit
How deep does the base need to be?
Six inches of compacted 2A modified under a patio, ten to twelve under anything a vehicle drives on. In Bucks County clay we often go deeper, and the proposal says which.
Pavers or bluestone?
Pavers are interlocking, forgiving of frost movement and easy to lift and re-set. Bluestone is irregular, looks right on older stone houses here, and costs more to cut and set. Both last if the base is right.
What is the white haze on my pavers?
Efflorescence — salts moving out of the concrete as it cures. It usually weathers off within a year. A cleaner made for it will take it off sooner; pressure washing will not.
Does a retaining wall need a permit?
In most of these townships, over four feet does, and over that height it needs an engineered design with geogrid. We file the drawings; you will see the engineer’s fee as its own line.
Can you work in winter?
Excavation and base work, yes, until the ground is frozen. We do not set polymeric sand or mortar below about fifty degrees, so those steps wait for a warm stretch.
