Why your website is slow on phones, and what to fix first

A slow site loses visitors before they read a word. These are the usual causes on small business websites, in the order worth fixing them, with no jargon.

When a page takes too long to show up on a phone, people do not wait. They tap back and pick another result. You never find out they were there.

The good news is that small business websites are usually slow for the same few reasons, and most of them are fixable.

How to check your own site

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi on your phone so you are using mobile data.
  2. Open your website in a private or incognito tab, so nothing is cached.
  3. Count how long it takes until you can read the top of the page and tap the call button.

For a more precise number, Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool will test any address and list what is slowing it down. Do not chase a perfect score. Chase a page that feels instant on your own phone.

The usual causes, in the order to fix them

1. Huge photos

This is the most common problem by far. A photo straight off a modern phone or camera can be several megabytes. Put ten of those on a homepage and a visitor on mobile data is downloading more than some apps. Photos should be resized to the size they are actually shown and saved in a modern format. This alone often makes a site several times faster.

2. Too many plugins and add-ons

Website builders and WordPress make it easy to add chat widgets, pop-ups, sliders, social feeds and tracking tools. Each one adds code the phone has to download and run. Remove anything you are not actually using.

3. Sliders and background videos

Rotating banners and auto-playing video look impressive on a fast office computer. On a phone they are heavy, often skipped, and push your phone number further down the page.

4. Cheap or overloaded hosting

Some low-cost hosting packs thousands of sites onto one server. If your page is slow before anything has even started loading, the host may be the bottleneck.

5. Old themes and outdated code

A theme built years ago may load fonts, scripts and styles the page no longer needs. Rebuilding is sometimes faster than untangling it.

Why it matters beyond impatience

Speed is part of how Google evaluates pages, and it is part of how customers judge whether a business is current. A fast site feels professional before anyone reads a word.

How we build for speed

Every ORELVI site is a lightweight static site: no page builder, no plugin stack, photos sized for the screen they are shown on, and checked at six screen widths before you see it. If your current site is slow, book a free proof and compare the two on your own phone.
